What is the best season to climb in Ecuador?

Ecuador's equatorial latitude provides two dry-season climbing windows: June through September and December through February. The June-September window tends to be drier with more stable summit conditions. Climbing is possible year-round due to the equatorial position, but summit success rates are highest in the dry seasons.

What is the easiest 5,000m peak to climb in Ecuador?

Accepted Answer

Iliniza Norte at 5,126m is the easiest 5,000m+ summit in Ecuador and the recommended first-time high-altitude climb. The route has 25-35 degree slopes, no glacier crossing required, and only a short rock-scramble section near the summit. The standard climb is 2 days / 1 night, starting from Refugio Nuevos Horizontes at 4,650m.

Do I need prior glacier experience to climb Cotopaxi?

Accepted Answer

Prior glacier experience is preferred but not strictly required for Cotopaxi (5,897m). Cotopaxi is graded Level 4. Our mountain guides will provide instruction in crampon and ice axe technique during the briefing. However, excellent physical condition and prior acclimatization to at least 4,500m are mandatory. For Chimborazo (6,263m, Level 5) prior glacier experience IS required.

How long do I need to acclimatize before climbing in Ecuador?

Accepted Answer

We recommend 4 to 7 days of progressive altitude exposure before any climb above 5,500m. Standard acclimatization itineraries include the Avenue of Volcanoes (5 days, Quito start), Volcano Circuit (4 days, Riobamba start), Quilotoa Loop (3 days, Latacunga start), or Lakes & Peaks (3 days, Quito start). Showing up to a 6,000m summit straight from sea level is the main cause of failed summit attempts.

Yes. Although Chimborazo at 6,263m is shorter than Mount Everest at 8,848m, Earth bulges at the equator due to planetary rotation. This means the summit of Chimborazo is the point on Earth's surface farthest from Earth's center, and therefore the closest point on Earth to the sun (and to space).

All high-mountain ascents run at a 1 guide to 2 climbers maximum ratio. This is the safety standard for glaciated high-altitude climbing where rope teams require precise coordination on crevasse-prone terrain. For day hikes and lower-altitude treks, the ratio is 1 guide to 6 hikers maximum.
